| Summary |
At the outset of World War I a group of German schoolboys, fired by patriotism, enlist for the Fatherland but are ill-prepared for the realities of trench warfare. Milestone sought to convey Remarque's pacifist message through a mixture of stylisation and naturalism. The poetic dialogue combines humour and sentimentality. The much-praised sense of reality in the recreation of trench warfare was achieved through unusually precise pre-planning and the harnessing of camera movement to swift cutting. |
